About the test

The Gmail - Usage and Concepts assessment is designed to measure a candidate's or employee's knowledge and skill in using Google Gmail to communicate effectively and professionally via email. This assessment serves multiple purposes, including pre-hire selection, employee development, and promotion selection, making it a versatile tool for evaluating software skills across various stages of the employment lifecycle. The test covers key areas such as composing and sending messages, replying and forwarding, organizing messages with labels and folders, attaching and downloading files, searching and filtering messages, and using signatures and out-of-office replies. Questions are presented in multiple choice and multiple correct answer formats, with some questions carrying time limits to improve predictive accuracy and deter dishonest responses. To further prevent cheating, questions are drawn from a large pool, ensuring a unique testing experience for each candidate or employee.

The specific attributes measured include:

Knowledge and Skills
  • Attaching and Downloading Files
  • Composing and Sending Messages
  • Organizing Messages with Labels, Folders, and Archiving
  • Replying, Replying to All, and Forwarding Messages
  • Searching and Filtering Messages
  • Using Signatures and Out-of-Office Replies

Following completion, the test produces a Candidate Selection Report that includes an overall score and detailed scores for each attribute.

The Candidate Selection Report also provides expert interview questions that help you probe critical or low-scoring areas, along with a guide for noting your evaluation of the candidate's responses. Consistent use of an interview guide is an important part of gaining better candidate insights and making better hiring decisions.

Note that while the Gmail - Usage and Concepts assessment is a useful and efficient instrument for confirming a base level of skill or knowledge about this important topic, it is not intended to pinpoint the exact level of candidate or skill. We recommend that skills tests, like this one, be used in parallel with other measurements, such as cognitive ability, job fit, and behavioral history. Each different type of test provides a valuable piece of information you can use when evaluating potential job performance.
