About the test

The Javascript Programming (Core) (Short) assessment is designed to evaluate the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level to mid-level programmers to write software programs for business operations using libraries, keywords, and packages from the standard specification of JavaScript. The test measures candidate and employee proficiency across six core skill areas, including Variables, Data Types, and Scope; Functions and Control Flow; Objects, Arrays, and Collection Structures; Asynchronous Programming and Promises; Object-Oriented Programming and Modules; and Error Handling and Debugging. It tests comprehension of scope rules, data types, and collection structures, gauges the implementation of program logic using functions and object-oriented principles, checks the execution of asynchronous operations, and measures string manipulation, arithmetic calculations, and data format conversion. The assessment also covers the isolation of runtime errors, tracking of program behaviors through console utilities, and identification of execution bottlenecks within the runtime environment.

The test presents a variety of question formats, including Multiple Choice, Multiple Correct Answer, and Essay Composition questions, with one or more questions scored using artificial intelligence to ensure accurate evaluation of open-ended responses. Questions are randomly selected from a large pool to minimize the risk of cheating, and one or more questions include individual time limits to further deter dishonesty and to improve the predictive accuracy of results.

The specific attributes measured include:

Knowledge and Skills
  • Asynchronous Programming and Promises
  • Functions and Control Flow
  • Objects, Arrays, and Collection Structures
  • Variables, Data Types, and Scope

Following completion, the test produces a Candidate Selection Report that includes an overall score and detailed scores for each attribute.

The Candidate Selection Report also provides expert interview questions that help you probe critical or low-scoring areas, along with a guide for noting your evaluation of the candidate's responses. Consistent use of an interview guide is an important part of gaining better candidate insights and making better hiring decisions.

Note that while the Javascript Programming (Core) (Short) assessment is a useful and efficient instrument for confirming a base level of skill or knowledge about this important topic, it is not intended to pinpoint the exact level of candidate or skill. We recommend that skills tests, like this one, be used in parallel with other measurements, such as cognitive ability, job fit, and behavioral history. Each different type of test provides a valuable piece of information you can use when evaluating potential job performance.
