About the test
The GIT - Usage and Concepts assessment is designed to measure candidates' and employees' knowledge of GIT concepts, techniques, syntax, and common usage, evaluating the skills necessary to perform a wide range of tasks using GIT. The test covers key areas including Repositories and Commits, Branches and Merging, Working with Remotes, Viewing History and Comparing Changes, Undoing and Reverting Changes, and Git Configuration and File Management, assessing understanding of foundational topics such as initializing and cloning repositories, staging changes, creating commits, managing branches, resolving merge conflicts, working with remotes, viewing commit histories, comparing changes with diff, reverting and resetting changes, and configuring GIT settings. It also evaluates comprehension of core architectural concepts such as the working directory, staging area, and repository, as well as the use of .gitignore for file exclusion, tags for marking commits, and collaborative workflows involving fetching and merging from remotes. The assessment uses Multiple Choice and Multiple Correct Answer questions to evaluate these skills, and questions are drawn from a large pool to help prevent cheating, with one or more questions carrying individual time limits to further deter cheating and to improve predictive performance.
The specific attributes measured include:
Knowledge and Skills
- Branches and Merging
- Git Configuration and File Management
- Repositories and Commits
- Undoing and Reverting Changes
- Viewing History and Comparing Changes
- Working with Remotes

Following completion, the test produces a Candidate Selection Report that includes an overall score and detailed scores for each attribute.
The Candidate Selection Report also provides expert interview questions that help you probe critical or low-scoring areas, along with a guide for noting your evaluation of the candidate's responses. Consistent use of an interview guide is an important part of gaining better candidate insights and making better hiring decisions.
Note that while the GIT - Usage and Concepts assessment is a useful and efficient instrument for confirming a base level of skill or knowledge about this important topic, it is not intended to pinpoint the exact level of candidate or skill. We recommend that skills tests, like this one, be used in parallel with other measurements, such as cognitive ability, job fit, and behavioral history. Each different type of test provides a valuable piece of information you can use when evaluating potential job performance.
