About the test

The Power BI - Usage and Concepts assessment is designed to evaluate the knowledge necessary to analyze complex data structures and extract insightful and actionable business intelligence using Power BI. It measures a wide range of skills, including connecting to data sources and performing transformations with Power Query, building data models and defining table relationships, applying DAX formulas and functions, designing reports with meaningful visualizations, configuring filters and slicers for data exploration, navigating data hierarchies using drill-through features, and publishing and sharing content through Power BI Service. The test covers six key focus areas: Data Connection and Transformation with Power Query, Data Modeling and Relationships, DAX Formulas and Measures, Report Design and Visualizations, Publishing, Sharing, and Power BI Service, and Hierarchies, Drill-Through, and Data Exploration. Questions are presented in multiple choice, multiple correct answer, and essay composition formats, are drawn from a large pool to minimize cheating, may include individual time limits to improve predictive performance, and one or more questions are scored using artificial intelligence.

The specific attributes measured include:

Knowledge and Skills
  • DAX Formulas and Measures
  • Data Connection and Transformation with Power Query
  • Data Modeling and Relationships
  • Hierarchies, Drill-Through, and Data Exploration
  • Publishing, Sharing, and Power BI Service
  • Report Design and Visualizations

Following completion, the test produces a Candidate Selection Report that includes an overall score and detailed scores for each attribute.

The Candidate Selection Report also provides expert interview questions that help you probe critical or low-scoring areas, along with a guide for noting your evaluation of the candidate's responses. Consistent use of an interview guide is an important part of gaining better candidate insights and making better hiring decisions.

Note that while the Power BI - Usage and Concepts assessment is a useful and efficient instrument for confirming a base level of skill or knowledge about this important topic, it is not intended to pinpoint the exact level of candidate or skill. We recommend that skills tests, like this one, be used in parallel with other measurements, such as cognitive ability, job fit, and behavioral history. Each different type of test provides a valuable piece of information you can use when evaluating potential job performance.
