About the test
The Carpentry (Commercial, Short) test is designed to measure the knowledge and skills of job candidates and employees in the principles and common practices of commercial carpentry, ranging from entry-level to mid-level proficiency. The assessment evaluates key skill areas including Blueprint and Drawing Interpretation, Framing Techniques, Materials Knowledge and Selection, Safety Practices and Procedures, Door and Window Installation, and Building Codes and Regulations. It covers a broad range of topics such as understanding blueprints and drawings, framing techniques for walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs, selection and application of materials like lumber and drywall, safety practices and use of protective equipment, door and window installation with hardware and weatherproofing, and compliance with commercial building codes and regulations.
The test uses a variety of question formats, including Essay Composition, Multiple Choice, and Multiple Correct Answer questions, with some questions incorporating artificial intelligence in scoring to ensure accurate evaluation. To enhance the integrity and predictive value of the assessment, questions are drawn from a large pool to reduce the risk of cheating, and one or more questions include time limits to further deter dishonesty and improve performance prediction. Together, these features make the Carpentry (Commercial, Short) test a comprehensive and reliable tool for assessing carpentry knowledge and skills in commercial construction settings.
The specific attributes measured include:

- Blueprint and Drawing Interpretation
- Framing Techniques
- Materials Knowledge and Selection

Following completion, the test produces a Candidate Selection Report that includes an overall score and detailed scores for each attribute.
The Candidate Selection Report also provides expert interview questions that help you probe critical or low-scoring areas, along with a guide for noting your evaluation of the candidate's responses. Consistent use of an interview guide is an important part of gaining better candidate insights and making better hiring decisions.
Note that while the Carpentry (Commercial, Short) assessment is a useful and efficient instrument for confirming a base level of skill or knowledge about this important topic, it is not intended to pinpoint the exact level of candidate or skill. We recommend that skills tests, like this one, be used in parallel with other measurements, such as cognitive ability, job fit, and behavioral history. Each different type of test provides a valuable piece of information you can use when evaluating potential job performance.
