About the test
The Electrical Work (Residential, Short) assessment is designed to measure the knowledge and skills of job candidates and employees in the construction, maintenance, repair, and upgrade of electrical systems within residential properties. The test evaluates entry-level to mid-level residential electricians across key areas including Wiring, Wire Sizing, and Circuits; Electrical Panels, Breakers, and Service Entrance; Outlets, Switches, and Fixtures; Grounding, Bonding, and Safety Practices; National Electrical Code (NEC) for Residential Work; and Reading Wiring Diagrams and Blueprints. It measures understanding of the NEC as it applies to residential systems, tools and materials used in electrical installations, service entrance components, load calculations, conduit installation, low-voltage systems, permitting and inspections, and energy-saving devices.
The assessment uses a variety of question formats, including Multiple Choice, Multiple Correct Answer, and Essay Composition questions, and measures skill-based competencies. Questions are drawn from a large pool to reduce the risk of cheating, and one or more questions include time limits to further prevent cheating and improve predictive performance. Additionally, one or more questions are scored using artificial intelligence, ensuring a thorough and modern evaluation of each candidate's or employee's residential electrical knowledge.
The specific attributes measured include:
Knowledge and Skills
- Electrical Panels, Breakers, and Service Entrance
- Grounding, Bonding, and Safety Practices
- Outlets, Switches, and Fixtures
- Wiring, Wire Sizing, and Circuits

Following completion, the test produces a Candidate Selection Report that includes an overall score and detailed scores for each attribute.
The Candidate Selection Report also provides expert interview questions that help you probe critical or low-scoring areas, along with a guide for noting your evaluation of the candidate's responses. Consistent use of an interview guide is an important part of gaining better candidate insights and making better hiring decisions.
Note that while the Electrical Work (Residential, Short) assessment is a useful and efficient instrument for confirming a base level of skill or knowledge about this important topic, it is not intended to pinpoint the exact level of candidate or skill. We recommend that skills tests, like this one, be used in parallel with other measurements, such as cognitive ability, job fit, and behavioral history. Each different type of test provides a valuable piece of information you can use when evaluating potential job performance.
