About the test
The Cognitive Ability for Customer Service Workers (Adaptive) is an ability assessment designed to measure the mental capacity necessary to learn how to deliver customer service and to perform tasks associated with providing customer service, intended for use in both pre-hire selection and promotion selection decisions. The assessment evaluates key cognitive abilities essential to effective job performance, including verbal comprehension, following instructions and procedures, problem solving, numerical reasoning, prioritization and task management, and learning and applying new information, all presented through realistic, work-related scenarios such as interpreting customer inquiries, calculating billing adjustments, and identifying appropriate solutions to service-related problems. Using computer adaptive testing (CAT) methodology, the assessment adjusts item difficulty in real time based on candidate responses, allowing for precise measurement of ability while minimizing test length and reducing item overexposure from a large, secure item bank. This approach supports reliable prediction of a candidate's readiness to learn new systems, retain product or policy knowledge, and consistently deliver accurate, helpful service to customers.
Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) represents the state-of-the-art in knowledge, skills, and ability testing. In a CAT test, the next question is selected based on the previous responses during the test to maximize the 'information value' of each question. Additionally, the test will stop once the total information available is enough to generate a reliable score. This approach is more secure, since the questions are selected from a large pool of over 100 questions. Additionally, CAT tests are usually much shorter than traditional tests, which eases the burden on the candidate.
If the overall score is most important for evaluation purposes, and if you wish to maximize the candidate experience, then a CAT test is the right way to go. However, if you want a structured, comprehensive review of key topics for every test, then a traditional format is the best choice, though this will take longer than a CAT test.
The assessment uses multiple choice and multiple correct answer question formats to evaluate candidates across its measured ability areas, ensuring broad and accurate coverage of the cognitive skills required in customer service roles. One or more questions are administered with time limits, which helps deter cheating and enhances the predictive validity of the assessment by measuring a candidate's ability to process information and make sound decisions efficiently under realistic time constraints. Together, these features make the Cognitive Ability for Customer Service Workers a comprehensive, secure, and job-relevant tool for identifying individuals with the cognitive readiness to succeed in customer service training and on-the-job performance.
The specific attributes measured include:
Cognitive Ability
- Following Instructions and Procedures
- Learning and Applying New Information
- Numerical Reasoning
- Prioritization and Task Management
- Problem Solving
- Verbal Comprehension

Following completion, the test produces a Candidate Selection Report that includes an overall score and detailed scores for each attribute.
The Candidate Selection Report also provides expert interview questions that help you probe critical or low-scoring areas, along with a guide for noting your evaluation of the candidate's responses. Consistent use of an interview guide is an important part of gaining better candidate insights and making better hiring decisions.
Note that while the Cognitive Ability for Customer Service Workers assessment is a useful and efficient instrument for confirming important traits and characteristics about a candidate or employee, it should always be used as a part of balanced evaluation program that includes other measurement or evaluation tools, including other assessments, interviews, work samples, and reference checks.
